What is under-eye puffiness?
Pockets are the result of a decrease in collagen in the skin, often linked to age. In the orbit, the eye is surrounded by a fatty cushion that protects it from the bone walls, and is held in place by a very thin tissue called the septum, which tends to distend with age. The fat then slides downwards, forming pockets, or fat hernias.
Pocket size can vary according to diet, sedentary lifestyle and hormonal cycle.
Fat pockets should not be confused with malar pockets, located lower down, which require a specific oculoplastic surgery procedure.
